Original abstract illustration: Plausible Analytics and Matomo compared side by side

Matomo is eighteen years old and does nearly everything Google Analytics does, on your own hardware, for nothing. Plausible is six years old, does considerably less on purpose, and charges for it. Both are open source, both can be run without cookies, and both are common destinations for people leaving GA4.

The choice is a straightforward one about scope and operations, and it is worth being honest that they are aimed at different buyers despite appearing on the same lists.

The verdict

It depends on how much analytics you need and who will run it.

Take Matomo if you need depth or ownership. Funnels, user flows, A/B testing, multi-channel attribution, roll-up reporting across properties, a tag manager, heatmaps and session recording are all there, and self-hosted it puts every raw event on your infrastructure with no sampling. For a regulated organisation, that is often the only acceptable answer.

Take Plausible if the depth would go unused, which for most websites it would. Its whole argument is that a single legible screen produces better decisions than a hundred reports nobody opens, and six years of refinement have made it the clearest dashboard in this category. It needs no server, no archiving job and no patching.

The decisive practical question is the same one that decides every Matomo comparison: will somebody actually operate a PHP and MySQL application, indefinitely? If the honest answer is no, Matomo Cloud at twenty-two euros for fifty thousand hits is more than twice Plausible's price for a metering unit that counts events as hits, and at that point Plausible wins on value as well as simplicity.

Common questions

Is Matomo harder to use than Plausible?

Yes, and deliberately so. Matomo's interface exposes far more, which is the point for an analyst and an obstacle for everybody else. Plausible is designed so a non-specialist reads it correctly on the first visit.

Which is cheaper?

Self-hosted Matomo is free of charge but not of cost, since you provide the server and the operations. On hosted plans Plausible is cheaper: £9 against €22, and Matomo meters hits rather than pageviews, so events count too.

Do both avoid the cookie banner?

Plausible always, because it has no cookies to disable. Matomo can, if you configure it for cookieless operation with IP anonymisation, which is configuration you have to get right.

Which should I pick coming from Google Analytics?

Matomo if you used GA4 deeply and will miss the reports, since it ships an importer and matches most of the surface. Plausible if you mostly looked at the traffic overview, which describes most people who think they need GA4.
