How I score

Ten measures, fixed weights, published in full so you can disagree with the ranking precisely rather than generally.

The thesis the weights encode

Most sites are over-tooled and under-informed. The best analytics tool for a website is the one that answers three questions, who came, what they read, and whether they stayed, without a consent banner, without a tag manager, and without costing you a tenth of a second of load time.

Every ranking has a thesis. Most comparison sites hide theirs, which is how you end up with a list whose order nobody can explain. Mine is above, the weights below are how it is expressed in arithmetic, and between them you can work out exactly why any tool sits where it does.

The ten measures

Each tool is scored from 0 to 10 on each measure. Scores are integers and they are relative to the other 29 tools on this list, not absolute: a 10 for script weight means the lightest here, not the lightest possible.

MeasureWeightWhat it means
Insight quality3Does it answer the questions you actually have, on one screen, without a specialist?
Privacy architecture2What the code can and cannot collect, judged on mechanism rather than policy.
Value for money2What it costs at real traffic volumes, relative to the rest of this list.
Setup and time to data1.5How much work stands between deciding to use it and having a useful number.
Script weight1.5The performance bill it hands your site on every single page view.
Analytical depth1Segments, funnels, cohorts, custom properties and retrospective questions.
Behaviour tooling1Heatmaps, scroll maps, attention maps and session replay.
Data ownership1Export, API access, retention terms and whether you can self-host.
Accuracy1Bot filtering, and what consent banners and ad blockers take away.
Vendor conduct1Billing behaviour, overage policy, pricing transparency and track record.
Total15The overall score is the weighted mean, to one decimal place.

How the weighted mean works

Multiply each score by its weight, add them up, divide by 15. A tool scoring 8 on everything gets an 8.0. The shape of the weighting means one measure dominates, two are strong seconds, and no single measure can decide the ranking on its own.

Change the weights and the ranking changes

This is the honest part and it is why the weights are published. If behaviour tooling mattered to you as much as insight quality, the heatmap and session replay tools would climb several places each. If you set script weight and privacy to zero, the enterprise suites and product analytics platforms would rise sharply and Google Analytics 4 would stop finishing last. Neither of those readers is wrong. They are using different weights, and this page exists so they can see which ones.

What this method cannot do

These limitations are real and I would rather state them than have them found.

It is desk research. Every score comes from published documentation, published pricing and public demonstrations, not from running each of the 30 tools on a live site for a quarter. That is a genuine limitation and it bites hardest on insight quality and setup, which are the measures a long trial would change most. Where an entry rests on unusually thin published evidence, its profile says so in the evidence field.

It compares things that are not alike. Putting Adobe Analytics and GoatCounter on one scale is inherently a bit odd, and a single number cannot capture that they are built for different people. That is what the category pages and the "best for" line on every profile are for. A tool ranked 26th may be exactly right for you, and several of them are.

Prices move. Everything here was read on 11 September 2026. Vendors change pricing without notice, and two of the tools on this list do not publish prices at all, which is itself scored under vendor conduct. Confirm anything that matters before you buy.

It is an opinion. Every score is a judgement I made. Nobody paid for their position, there are no affiliate links anywhere on this site, and I have no commercial relationship with any tool listed. If you think a score is wrong, tell me what evidence I have missed and I will look at it.
