Contentsquare
The experience analytics roll-up that now owns Hotjar and Heap.
It has acquired its way to owning three separate entries' worth of this market, including two on this list.
The verdict
Contentsquare is what happens when a category consolidates. It bought Hotjar in 2021 and Heap in 2023, and now sells experience analytics, product analytics and voice-of-customer as one portfolio with a shared free tier. For a large retailer or a bank trying to understand why a journey leaks money, the combination of zone-based heatmaps, journey analysis and revenue impact quantification is genuinely strong, and the French-European ownership and EU hosting help in procurement.
The free tier is unexpectedly generous, at 200,000 monthly sessions with replays, heatmaps and funnels, which is the Hotjar tier under a new name.
What you actually get
Zone-based heatmaps are the feature worth understanding. Rather than colouring pixels, it measures engagement by page zone and attaches revenue to each, so you can say what a carousel is worth rather than that people clicked on it. For an ecommerce team with a conversion target that is a better question than a click map answers.
The reservations are the roll-up's own. Three product lineages with three data models take time to become one product, and buyers should ask hard questions about which parts share a backend and which merely share an invoice. Pricing above Growth is quoted. And everything true of Hotjar on privacy is true here, since it is largely the same capture machinery: a heavy script, cookies, a demanding consent requirement because sessions are recorded, and a capture-then-mask architecture whose configuration is your responsibility.
Best for
Enterprise ecommerce and financial services teams who need behaviour, journey and revenue analysis in one place, with EU hosting and a procurement process to satisfy.
Getting it running
A tag, then a configuration project covering zones, journeys, masking and integrations. More involved than Hotjar alone, less than Adobe.
What to watch out for
A roll-up of three product lineages, so ask which components genuinely share a data model. Pro pricing is quoted. Heavy script, cookies, and the full consent obligation that session recording carries. Masking is configuration, not a default.
Pricing and practicalities
Free at 200,000 monthly sessions with replays, heatmaps and funnels. Growth from $39 a month billed yearly, from 7,000 monthly sessions, with three projects and 13 months of data access. Pro is quoted. EU hosted. Prices read 2026-09-11.
Who should go elsewhere
Anyone who wants one clear tool rather than a portfolio, where Microsoft Clarity costs nothing and Hotjar's free tier is the same allowance without the upsell path. Also not for sites that cannot carry a consent banner, which is the gap Absolutely Analytics is built into.
How it compares
Against Hotjar the comparison is slightly absurd, because it is now the same company and the same free tier, and the difference is how much of the enterprise portfolio you are sold afterwards. Against FullStory it is the broader suite with the weaker session query model.
Head to head:
The ten measures
Each measure is scored 0 to 10 and weighted. The overall figure is the weighted mean, and it is relative to the other 29 tools on this list rather than absolute. How this works.
What this rests on
Contentsquare's own pricing page, read 2026-09-11, which now also serves hotjar.com; its published announcements of the Hotjar and Heap acquisitions; its documentation on zone-based heatmaps and journey analysis.
Desk research against published material. Upper-tier pricing is quoted rather than published, and the degree of technical integration between the acquired products is not something I can verify from outside, so both are flagged rather than scored confidently.
This is a desk review. I have not been given access by the vendor, I have no commercial relationship with them, and everything above is my opinion rather than a statement of fact. If something here is wrong, tell me and I will correct it.
